Gender Equality & Mental Health – Latest Developments

The 4-day training course 'Gender Equality & Mental Health' was recently developed and piloted with the support of the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU).

This course is innovative in helping staff bring an understanding of gender and other inequalities, not only to their work with women but also to their work with men and people who are transgendered.

To provide this course throughout the country, Inequality Agenda has created a National Team of fifteen accredited trainers: click here for a PDF of the list

Collaboration with CGSM in Canada

Dr Jennie Williams is a member of the international Advisory Committee for the Centre for the Study of Gender, Social Inequities and Mental Health (CGSM). The Centre is being funded for 5 years by the Canadian Institute of Health Research.

During a 2-week visit to the Centre in June 2010, Jennie joined workshops and also made two presentations. She then piloted the new 4-day training course 'Gender Equality & Mental Health' (see news item above), as part of the Centre's summer school.

The event was attended by the team at the Centre and local mental health practitioners. Find out here what this lively group of people thought about the course. Their feedback makes it clear that, with minor modification, this course will be highly relevant to the needs of the mental health workforce in Canada.

The next step is for Dr Marina Morrow, the Principal Investigator at CGSM, and Jennie to collaborate in bidding for funds to create a team of trainers to provide the GEMH course in British Columbia.

Men's Health Forum (MHF)

Jennie has joined the Advisory Group on Men’s Mental Health. The main task, which is being led by David Wilkins (MHF) and Mariam Kemple (Mind), is to write a guide that will help meet the mental health needs of men which were identified in the earlier publication “Untold Problems”, which you can download here.

You can find out more about what is going on here on the MHF website.

Shamrock the Office Dog

Shamrock, the office dog

Sadly Shamrock, a valued member of the Inequality Agenda Team, is no longer with us. She enjoyed dozing about the place, mostly with her legs in the air, as well as the general to-ing and fro-ing of office life. We greatly enjoyed her antics and company, and shall miss her.
