to Inequality Agenda, where we provide support to staff working throughout mental health services to meet the gendered needs of women and men.

Staff are well aware that women and men using services come with different experiences and needs, but are often unsure what this means for their practice. Our training courses and consultancy replace this uncertainty with competence and confidence.

Our Director

is Dr Jennie Williams, a clinical psychologist with a lifetime commitment to understanding and challenging social inequalities and to revealing and addressing the implications for mental health.

She has contributed to this field from a range of positions e.g. as a clinician, researcher, writer, lecturer, consultant and trainer. Jennie has published extensively, and has worked closely with the Department of Health on developing and implementing the Women’s Mental Health Strategy.

Our Broad Aim

is to support the development of services that are informed by knowledge and understanding of the harm that can be caused by gender and other inequalities, and where there is a shared understanding that healthy relationships between staff and patients/clients are at the heart of change.

Our Focus

In the past we have mainly been concerned to make the vast literature on women’s mental health accessible and useful to staff working with, or on behalf of, women.

Although men’s mental health has never had a strong following, there is growing recognition from the Department of Health and elsewhere, e.g. Men’s Health Forum, that service responses to men also require equivalent attention.
